Five unique national programs involving high school age and
younger track & field
and cross country athletes are:
USA Cross Country Championships - consists of Senior and Junior Divisions. The Junior Division is open to
athletes from 14 to those not turning 20 during the calendar year. The
Senior Division is for athletes age 20 or older at any time during the
calendar year.
Junior Outdoor T&F
Championships - the premier meet for the elite junior-age athlete (age
14 to athletes not turning 20 in the year of competition). It is at this
meet that the US Junior team is selected for the Pan American Games
(odd-numbered years) and the World Championships (even numbered years).
Athletes selected for these trips have the honor of representing the USA and
receiving the official USA Track & Field uniform given to those team members
(the Junior cross country team also receives these uniforms).
Youth Outdoor T&F Championships
- an age-group divided National Track and Field Championship. The ages of athletes range
from those who are 10 and under to those still 18 on the last day of the USATF National
Junior Olympics Championships. An athlete qualifies for the meet by meeting a
qualification standard.
Junior Olympic T&F Championships - a progressive
meet. Athletes must compete in their Association Championships and qualify by place to
move on to the Regional and National levels. The age requirement is the same as Youth
Athletics.
Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships - set up the same as the
JO Track & Field Championships, as a progressive meet.
